Men’s Tennis earns No. 1 overall seed in NCAA Championship

The Longhorns are the top seed for the first time in program history and will host UTSA, Pepperdine and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi from May 6-7 at the Texas Tennis Center.

Austin, Texas – The top-ranked Texas Men's Tennis team earned the No. 1 overall seed in the 2023 NCAA Championship field that was announced Monday by the NCAA. The Longhorns will host First and Second Round matches on Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7, at the Texas Tennis Center.

It marks the first time in program history UT has been the top seed in the tournament, which dates back to 1977, after having been the No. 2 seed in 2019. It is also the third time in the last four years in which it has been played that the Longhorns have been a top-four seed, along with being No. 4 in 2021. It was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic.

No. 1 Texas (22-3) will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (20-7) on Saturday, May 6, in the first round at 1 p.m. CT, while No. 37 Pepperdine (18-8) will take on No. 41 UTSA (18-6) earlier that day at 10 a.m. CT. The winners of those matches will play on Sunday, May 7, at 1 p.m. CT.

The Longhorns earned their 31st consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships and their 40th overall selection since the NCAA bracketed tournament was introduced in 1977. They have compiled a 69-38 all-time record in the tournament. 

Texas hosts the opening rounds of the NCAA Championships for a sixth-straight year and for the eighth time in the last nine years in which the tournament has been held.

Along with winning the 2019 National Championship, the Longhorns were the national runners-up in 2008, and additionally made it to the semifinals in 1993, 2006, 2009 and 2021. They have reached at least the round of 16 in each of the last eight years with four quarterfinals appearances in 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2021 in that span.

The NCAA will announce its singles and doubles qualifiers for the NCAA Championship on Tuesday, May 2, on NCAA.com.

Saturday, May 6 – First Round
10 a.m.: Pepperdine vs. UTSA
1 p.m.: TEXAS vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Sunday, May 7 – Second Round
1 p.m.: Pepperdine/UTSA winner vs. TEXAS/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi winner

Inclement Weather
In the case of inclement weather, matches will be moved indoors to the Edgar O. & Melanie A. Weller Tennis Center at the University of Texas Golf Club. Fans will be permitted to attend matches that are moved indoors.
