Athens, Ga. – Texas Men's Tennis captured seven of eight matches against players from Virginia, including five in singles and two in doubles, to close play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday.
In singles, junior No. 35 Eliot Spizzirri earned a solid top-five win over No. 4 Inaki Montes De La Torre, 6-3, 6-2, as the Longhorns swept the singles contests. Those included all juniors for Texas as No. 98 Siem Woldeab downed No. 63 Ryan Goetz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, Cleeve Harper defeated Alexander Kiefer, 6-4, 6-2, Evin McDonald topped Ty Switzer, 6-2, 6-1, and Eshan Talluri bested William Woodall, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
Prior to that, the Longhorns took two out of three in doubles with Talluri combining with senior Chih Chi Huang for an 8-3 win against Kiefer and Jeffery Von Der Schulenburg, and Woldeab and McDonald partnering for an 8-6 victory over Switzer and Chris Rodesch. The remaining match also was decided at 8-6 as the No. 16 pair of Spizzirri and Harper fell to Montes De La Torre and Goetz.
The Longhorns will next have several players compete in the Commodore Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., from Sept. 23-25.
