Badgers rout Boilermakers for third straight win

Wisconsin secures a perfect road weekend by beating Purdue 6-1

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Wisconsin men's tennis team ended a perfect weekend in Indiana after defeating Purdue on the road Sunday afternoon for its third straight win.

The Badgers (11-9, 5-2 Big Ten) downed the Boilermakers (9-12, 2-5) by a score of 6-1 to end their final regular-season road trip undefeated. UW scored a 4-3 win at Indiana on Friday.

Wisconsin has won four of its last five matches and is third in the Big Ten standings heading into the final week of the regular season. UW trails only No. 2-ranked Ohio State (7-0) and No. 7 Michigan (7-1) in the league race and will face the Buckeyes on Friday before wrapping up with Penn State on Sunday. The Badgers are looking to secure their first top-three Big Ten finish since tying for second in 2008.

Sunday, for the second straight match, Mihailo Popovic and Lenard Soha got things started for UW on the doubles front. The duo worked their way to a 6-3 win over Purdue's Andre Suzanne and Milledge Cossu.

Quickly following suit, Robin Parts and Sebastian Vile secured a 6-1 victory to clinch the doubles point. The pair defeated Michal Wozniak and Piotr Galus at the No. 1 position for their eighth win working together this season.

Momentum was already swinging in the Badgers' favor, up 1-0 after doubles play. Sophomore Tim Dzhurinskiy gave a dominating performance at the No. 6 singles position with a quick straight-sets win to put the second Badger point on the board. Dhzurinskiy took down Wozniak 6-4, 6-0 for his 13th singles win of the season.

At No. 3 singles, Gabriel Huber put the Badgers up 3-0 with a win giving him a perfect solo 2-0 weekend. Huber took care of business with a quick 6-1, 6-4 win over Tomasz Dudek.

Parts was the next Badger to get a singles win, clinching the match on an exciting third-set deuce point. After dropping the first set 6-4, he came from behind for a 6-3 win in the second. Parts cruised through the final set, winning 6-1 over Galus and securing the team win.

Adding onto the Badgers' score, Lenard Soha grabbed an impressive three-set win at No. 2 singles for the fifth team point. Soha downed Gabriele Brancatelli 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 before fellow senior Vile closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 7-5 win over Sachdev.

The Badgers' 6-1 win marked their largest margin of victory in Big Ten play and their best since beating Marquette by the same score in early February.

The Badgers conclude the regular season by hosting No. 2-ranked Ohio State on Friday, April 22, and Penn State on Sunday, April 24, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Senior Day will be celebrated during the Penn State match.
