Badgers go out with a bang to end regular season

Wisconsin secures third-place Big Ten finish with 4-0 rout of Penn State

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's tennis team concluded its regular season Sunday with an exciting 4-0 win over Penn State. The Badgers took down the Nittany Lions despite windy conditions to secure their fourth straight win and a third-place finish in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin (12-9, 6-2 Big Ten) has won five of its last six matches entering next week's Big Ten tournament, and the Badgers' .750 win percentage in Big Ten matches stands as their best in conference play since going 8-2 (.800) in 2008. In finishing third in league play, the Badgers also have their first top-three Big Ten finish since tying for second place in 2008.

The No. 3 seed Badgers will open Big Ten tournament play by facing No. 6 seed Illinois (13-13, 5-4) in a quarterfinal matchup at 6 p.m. Friday on their home courts at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, where UW has posted a 7-1 record this season.

Sunday's regular-season finale served to honor Jared Pratt, Lenard Soha and Daniel Nuzhny, who were celebrated with Senior Day ceremonies to thank them for their dedication and contribution to the Badger tennis program over the past four years.

At No. 1 doubles, Robin Parts and Sebastian Vile came out strong and grabbed the first Badger win of the match with a 6-3 win over Penn State's Malik Bhatnagar and Charl Morgan. This was their ninth victory as a pair this season and put the Badgers halfway to taking the doubles point.

Pratt and Tim Dhzurinskiy quickly followed with an equally impressive performance at No. 2 doubles. Their 6-3 win over Bora Sengul and Alexander Karman clinched the doubles point and put the Badgers up 1-0 headed into singles play.

For the second week in a row, Dzhurinskiy struck first at No. 6 singles with a quick 6-3, 6-4 win over Chikaya Sato, his 14th singles win of the season.

At No. 3 singles, Gabriel Huber put the Badgers up 3-0 and ran away with a thrilling second-set tiebreaker to win the match. Huber defeated Byers 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) for his third-straight singles victory.

Vile won the match for Wisconsin with another straight-set victory over Bhatnagar. After a back-and-forth battle in the first set, it came down to a tiebreaker which Vile dominated and came out a perfect 7-0 to take the set 7-6. The momentum kept swinging in Vile's favor and he took the second set 6-4 to win the match and propel the Badgers into next week's Big Ten tournament.

Straight from the Court
Head Coach Danny Westerman"I couldn't ask for more from the guys. Once we got to Big Ten play, they learned a lot from early non-conference matches. You like to win a bit earlier and put ourselves in a good position early with a great seed and great regular season in the Big Ten. We're playing very well at the right time and to have it at home next week should be really exciting for us."

Senior Lenard Soha"I loved that the boys got it done and that's all that I can ask… I think we really evolved, all of us, as tennis players this season and that's my favorite part of it."
